On March 28, 1979, a cooling system failure at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania triggered a partial meltdown. It was the worst nuclear accident in American history. For several days, residents within ten miles were told to stay indoors. A hundred thousand people evacuated. The fear was immediate, real, and national.

Six months later, in September 1979, Musicians United for Safe Energy — MUSE — staged five consecutive nights of benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York. The lineup was staggering: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and others. The concerts raised money for anti-nuclear organizations and produced a live triple album and a concert film, both released in 1980.

No Nukes wasn't just a benefit concert. It was the first major rock-organized political action of its scale — a proof of concept that musicians could mobilize an audience around an issue that wasn't just abstract politics, but something people could feel. The template it created echoed forward through Live Aid, Farm Aid, and every major benefit event that followed.

Springsteen's sets, in particular, became legendary — raw, long, and ferocious in a way that made the recordings some of the most sought-after bootlegs of the era before the official release. He didn't want to play it safe. Nobody did.
