Memphis, 1954. Sam Phillips Had a Theory.

Sam Phillips believed that if he could find a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel, he could make a billion dollars. He was running a small recording studio at 706 Union Avenue. The musicians he was after already existed — they'd grown up hearing country on one radio station and R&B on another, and some of them had stopped choosing between the two.

Elvis Presley walked in first. Then Carl Perkins — who wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" and arguably deserved more of what Elvis got. Then Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison. The musicians who came through Sun Records in those few years didn't set out to invent a genre. They were just playing what they heard in their heads: country structures, R&B feel, the tempo cranked up until something new fell out.

That something was rockabilly. It spread fast — Eddie Cochran in California, Gene Vincent in Virginia, Billy Lee Riley back in Memphis — and burned just as fast. By 1960 it was largely over, absorbed into pop on one side and country on the other. But the sound never completely disappeared. It went underground, came back through the UK in the '70s and '80s, and never stopped finding people who needed it.
