On January 27, 1970, John Lennon wrote "Instant Karma!" in one morning, recorded it that afternoon at Abbey Road, and had it in stores within ten days. He wasn't kidding about the instant part.
The session was produced by Phil Spector — one of their first collaborations, weeks before Spector's controversial work remixing Let It Be. Klaus Voormann played bass. Alan White played drums. The backing vocalists weren't a gospel choir: Lennon sent someone to Hatchetts nightclub in Mayfair at midnight and had them bring back whoever was there. Those people sang on the record. That's the kind of session this was.
The song was a call to wake up, show up, and recognize that what you put into the world comes right back at you. Lennon delivered it with the urgency of a man who had no time for anything less than the truth. It reached #3 in the US, #5 in the UK. Written, recorded, and charting — all within the same month.
