The Lonesome Sound That Built Country Music.

Georgiana, Alabama. 1923. Hiram King Williams was born into poverty, learned guitar from a Black street musician named Rufus Payne, and by the time he was 29 years old had written some of the most enduring songs in American music history.

"Your Cheatin' Heart." "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." "Hey Good Lookin'." "Jambalaya." "Cold, Cold Heart" — which Tony Bennett covered and took to #1 on the pop charts, introducing Hank Williams to an entirely new audience. He wrote over 200 songs in a career that lasted less than a decade.

Bob Dylan called him the greatest songwriter who ever lived. Bruce Springsteen studied his phrasing. Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash all cited him as the reason they picked up a guitar. His influence runs through country, rock, folk, and soul — any American music that tells the truth about hard times.

He died on New Year's Day, 1953, in the back seat of a Cadillac on the way to a show in Canton, Ohio. He was 29 years old.

In less than a decade, he changed everything.

This tee is for the people who know that the lonesome sound he invented never really went away.
