In 1987, MTV had a problem. The music video format was aging. The novelty had worn off. The network needed to become something more than a jukebox, but nobody knew exactly what that meant. The answer, it turned out, was a game show set in a fake basement, hosted by a guy named Ken Ober, with contestants sitting in recliners and changing "channels" by answering trivia questions.

Remote Control ran from 1987 to 1990 and was MTV's first original non-music programming — the network's first serious attempt to be a television channel rather than a promotional vehicle. It worked, partly because the show was genuinely weird. Categories included things like "Dead or Canadian" and "Sing Along With Colin." The set looked like a suburban rec room that had gotten slightly out of hand. The humor was fast, self-aware, and thoroughly Gen X.

The featured players included Colin Quinn, who later anchored Weekend Update on SNL, Denis Leary, who became one of the defining stand-up voices of the early 1990s, and a young Adam Sandler, who was 21 when the show started and spent three years being loudly wrong about trivia before graduating to Saturday Night Live in 1991. He has since become one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. The recliner years are well documented.

The show ended in 1990. MTV kept going in other directions. But Remote Control is where the channel figured out it could be something besides a radio station with pictures.
