A flat island in the Thames Estuary. Population 40,000. Oil refineries, fish and chip shops, and two bands that changed everything.

In the early 1970s, Canvey Island, Essex produced Dr. Feelgood and Eddie and the Hot Rods within a few years of each other. Both came out of the same tight-knit working-class community. Both played the same pubs. Both developed a raw, stripped-down sound that was a direct reaction against the bloated excess of the era.

Dr. Feelgood came first. Wilko Johnson's choppy, staccato guitar and Lee Brilleaux's menacing frontman energy were unlike anything else in Britain in 1974. Eddie and the Hot Rods followed — faster, younger, and punk-adjacent before punk had a name.

Between them, they invented pub rock, cleared the ground for punk, and proved that the most dangerous music in Britain wasn't coming from London. It was coming from Essex.

The Sex Pistols cited them. The Clash cited them. Every band that mattered in 1976 had seen Dr. Feelgood play.

This tee wears that legacy: Canvey Island · Essex · The Birthplace of British Pub Rock. Available in Asphalt, Natural, and Vintage Black, XS–4XL. Made to order, built to last.
