The interview was about "I Can See for Miles." Townshend claimed it was the loudest, most ferocious thing ever put on tape. McCartney read it, went into the studio, and told the band they were going to make something that would make Townshend's record sound polite. What followed was one of the most physically grueling recording sessions in Beatles history.

"Helter Skelter" was recorded on July 18, 1968 for the White Album. Early versions ran over 27 minutes — sprawling, chaotic, essentially a different song. The version that ended up on the record is a tighter, later take, captured after countless passes through the song at maximum volume and maximum effort. By the end of the session, everyone was done. Ringo Starr, who had been pounding his kit harder than he ever had before, reached a point of genuine physical exhaustion and shouted into the microphone: "I got blisters on my fingers!" It wasn't a joke. It wasn't a performance. He was finished. The engineers left it in. It closes the song.

The song was later grotesquely misread by Charles Manson, who claimed it was a coded message directed at him personally. It isn't. It's a song about a fairground helter-skelter — a spiral slide. McCartney has said the Manson association is the most disturbing misappropriation of anything he has ever written. The song itself is about playing fast and loose and descending headlong into something. The tee is about the moment a man's hands gave out and he said so, out loud, and it became part of rock history.
