I'm Not Like Everybody Else.

Ray Davies wrote it, and Dave Davies sang it — which matters. Ray was the observer, the ironist, the social critic. Dave was the one who sounded like he might actually fight you about it. The combination is what makes the track work.

The song was released in June 1966 as the B-side to "Sunny Afternoon," which went to #1 in the UK. "Sunny Afternoon" is a brilliant song. "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" is a more dangerous one. B-sides have a way of doing that.

The Kinks were in a particular situation in 1966. They had been banned from touring the United States by the American Federation of Musicians in 1965 — a ban that lasted four years, until 1969. The reasons were disputed: an altercation with a union official, a reputation for erratic behavior, accounts that differ depending on who you ask. The practical effect was that while the British Invasion was cresting, the Kinks were locked out of the American market. Ray Davies wrote inward. The period produced some of the most original work in British rock: "Tired of Waiting for You," "A Well Respected Man," "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," "Waterloo Sunset" — a run of distinctly English social observation with no equivalent on either side of the Atlantic.

"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" is the raw nerve version of that period. No irony. No distance. Just the statement, delivered like a dare.

The design says it the same way — reversed, mirrored, read differently depending on where you're standing. Which is exactly the point.
