Nobody knows exactly when Jimmy Sherman opened El Gordo. Somewhere in the Southwest, sometime in the 1960s, in a strip mall that smelled like mesquite and margarita mix. The sign out front promised "Beeg Theek Steaks" — and apparently, he delivered.
El Gordo was the kind of place where the booths were red vinyl, the cocktails came in glasses the size of your head, and the sombrero on the wall had been there since opening night. Jimmy didn't advertise. He didn't need to. Word got around.
He's been gone for years. The restaurant too. But the graphic lives on — and now it's on a tee.
