Sheffield, 1978. A steel city in South Yorkshire, built on foundries and cutlery works, where the air smelled like metal and the winters were long and grey.

Nobody expected what came next.

While London was still processing punk, a group of young musicians in Sheffield picked up synthesizers instead of guitars and started making something entirely new. The Human League. Cabaret Voltaire. ABC. Pulp. They didn't sound like anything coming out of Manchester or New York or Los Angeles. They sounded like Sheffield — cold, precise, industrial, and quietly devastating.

The city shaped the sound. The factories and the steel works and the unemployment and the grey skies all went into it. Synthesizers didn't soften any of that — they amplified it. The result was a body of music that defined the early 1980s and still sounds like nothing else.

Where the machines learned to sing.
