Berlin, 1967. Edgar Froese founded Tangerine Dream at the intersection of avant-garde art and electronic experimentation — and spent the next five decades building sonic landscapes that no one else could imagine, let alone create.
While Kraftwerk were engineering precision in Düsseldorf, Tangerine Dream were doing something altogether more atmospheric in Berlin. Their music didn't have beats so much as it had weather — vast, slowly shifting synthesizer textures that felt less like songs and more like environments you could inhabit. They pioneered the Berlin School of electronic music alongside Klaus Schulze and Cluster, and in doing so invented what we now call ambient music before Brian Eno had given it a name.
Phaedra (1974) and Rubycon (1975) remain two of the most immersive listening experiences in recorded music. Stratosfear. Ricochet. Tangram. Album after album, Froese and his rotating cast of collaborators — including Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann — pushed further into uncharted sonic territory.
Then Hollywood called. Their scores for Sorcerer (1977), Thief (1981), and Risky Business (1983) redefined what film music could sound like — atmospheric, electronic, emotionally vast. Every cinematic electronic score that followed owes them a debt.
Edgar Froese died in January 2015. Tangerine Dream continues under the direction of his estate, his vision intact.
