This Means Nothing to Me. (It Should Mean Everything.)

London, 1974. Ultravox formed at the exact moment punk was igniting and electronic music was being born — and they refused to choose between them. Instead they built something entirely their own: art-rock with synthesizers, post-punk with orchestral ambition, pop music that actually had something to say.

The John Foxx era gave us Ha!-Ha!-Ha! and Systems of Romance — cold, cinematic, ahead of their time. Then Midge Ure arrived and everything crystallized. Vienna (1980) remains one of the most perfectly constructed songs in British pop history — atmospheric, melancholic, utterly unique. It spent four weeks at #2 in the UK, famously kept off the top spot by Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face. The injustice still stings.

Duran Duran studied them. Spandau Ballet owed them. The entire New Romantic movement that defined the early '80s ran through Ultravox first — and somehow they never got the headline credit they deserved.
