1959. CBS. A broke, girl-crazy teenager from Central City sits in front of a Rodin-inspired statue and talks directly to you about his problems. America is completely charmed.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis ran for four seasons and launched the careers of Tuesday Weld, Warren Beatty, and Bob Denver — who would go on to play Gilligan, but first played Maynard G. Krebs, television's original beatnik. Maynard recoiled in horror at the word "work." He played the bongos. He wore a goatee. He was, in many ways, ahead of his time.
The show was sharp, witty, and genuinely weird for its era. It deserves to be remembered.
